Artist Statement

Light from the early morning sun, shrouded by a blanket of passing storm clouds, appears just above the mountains forming the distant horizon. Steam drifts from my coffee in the cold alpine breeze as I slowly search the mountainous countryside for the magnificence I eagerly anticipated the day before. My eyes finally affix to the dew brushed forest and the fog dancing on the lake below, the grand mountains and swirling sky above. As I set my tripod and camera into position, I breathe in the pine-scented breeze and take a sip of coffee. One final look through the viewfinder to make sure the grandeur and splendor of the earth has been flawlessly captured. Then, the perfect moment…

Since I can remember, nature has always inspired me to make photographs. Aiming for both expansive and intimate landscapes, I enjoy discovering, exploring, and capturing the uniqueness, simplicity, and dramatic moments of nature. Subjects that are blessed by nature as their surrounding inspire me to record their fortunate position on film. As an outlet to my "other" highly structured, engineering-based life, I savor every chance I have to experience the outdoors.

Calling Arizona my home, I am fortunate to be surrounded by a multitude of opportunities to capture the ever-changing landscape, ranging from unique rock formations in Arizona to the spectacular Pacific Northwest, wild Montana, and sculpted Utah. I also enjoy documenting the history of the western United States through photographing mining camps, ghost towns, and Native American relics.

Photography for me is a never-ending cycle of learning, experimenting, and evaluating. To learn photography fundamentals, in late 2001, I enrolled in a Chandler-Gilbert Community College course, and it was so much fun, I stayed 5 semesters! Initially working with black and white photography exclusively, I introduced color photography to my portfolio in late 2002. Though not currently enrolled in a photography course, I learn every time I go on a photo shoot. I love experimenting with new techniques and compositions to make inspiring representations of the glorious scene in front of my lens.

I take another sip of coffee and scan the peaceful landscape for the next perfect moment.
